Paidamoyo Mutyambizi, a Zimbabwean model based in Australia has won the January wildcard to mark the return of the Face of Zimbabwe competition, a popular international internet based pageant for Zimbabweans worldwide.

Launched last year to promote the country abroad, Face of Zimbabwe is coming out of a successful year which saw huge international interest and the crowning of Sibo Bero as Face of Zimbabwe 2012. The pageant attracted finalists from China, UK, USA, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Zimbabwe establishing itself as a premier and much sought after crown.

The competition selects a finalist every month online with the 12 monthly finalists squaring up at the end of the year to compete for the crown. Last year the monthly finalists played a critical role in selling Zimbabwe’s tourism destinations to the world and raised significant sums of money for orphaned children in the Epworth area.

The January winner, Mutyambizi who is based in New South Wales, is currently making inroads in the Australian modelling industry. In 2009, the stunning 22 year old beauty was crowned Miss Africa Australia, NSW in 2009 and has never looked back. Speaking to Zim Life Style Magazine after being named Miss January, she said “I am extremely excited by this challenge, now that I am here, there is nothing I want more than taking the final crown and doing some charity work”.

Mike Tashaya, the pageant’s marketing director who is currently in Zimbabwe to meet with potential sponsors said the 2012 competition will build on the growth of last year and promises to be bigger and more exciting. “We are currently making arrangements to hold the finals in Zimbabwe at the end of the year so we are keen to have a lot more participations from Zimbabwe based contestants and businesses looking to partner with us”.

London based marketing firm, KMG Media which organises the competition have announced the appointment of model, Emily Marambakuyana, a former contestant as one of the administrators for the 2012 competition and a potential shake-up to the judging panel.

Face of Zimbabwe recently signed a contract with technology company Enerco (Pvt) Ltd to enhance text voting and content download. The organisers are currently negotiating sponsorship deals with a number of top Zimbabwean companies. The pageant has also signed Harare photographer Michele Fortmann as the competition’s official photographer.

As part of its 2012 charity initiative, Face of Zimbabwe is set to launch a Scholarship Fund to support underprivileged children who need assistance with their school fees. The fund will be opened up to applicants from the entire country and is set to assist a significant number of beneficiaries.

Prospective contestants looking to enter the competition can do so online at www.faceofzimbabwe.com or by contacting the organisers on info@faceofzimbabwe.com

Conservationists fight back

nm tiger

THEY’RE alarming these predictions that rhino could be headed for extinction if poaching in this country continues at its present rate. After the astonishing success of the rescue from extinction of the white rhino – to which people like Ian Player devoted a lifetime – it’s nothing short of heartbreaking.

And the truly astounding thing is that it’s all caused by a gigantic myth. Chinese men believe ground-up rhino horn is the key ingredient of a potion that promotes male sexual potency. They’re prepared to pay anything for it.

China’s economic boom has produced a huge market of men with spare cash, willing to pay for increased sexual potency. Hence the international syndicates, the big money and high technology that go into poaching. It’s a vicious circle.

But there’s hope. The conservationists are fighting back. They plan to overcome this ancient myth with digital technology and modern myth. Already a message is flitting about cyberspace.

It reads: “The testicles of a rhino poacher can cure HIV/Aids. Please spread the word.”

The extinction of rhino poachers as a species could be very sudden.

Slip-ons, kaalvoet

AN INDIAN minister in the state government has pledged to wear only slip-on shoes in future after an extraordinary row when a young man was shown on television tying his laces at a public event.

Gauri Shankar Bisen, a minister in Madhya Pradesh state, says he’s been told by doctors to avoid bending after a hernia operation. The son of a friend tied his laces for him and it was captured on television. His political opponents have now tried to turn it into a caste issue.

“I swear that from now onwards, I will not wear any shoes with laces.”

I sympathise. From now on I myself go kaalvoet – ever since the waitresses seized my flipflops at the La Bella street shelter for over-40s the other night and paddywhacked me for allegedly risqué comments (All I was doing was quoting Chaucer).

Fatness factor (1)

IS FATNESS a guarantee against flight risk? Not in New Zealand, it seems.

Lawyers for a 6 feet 6 inch (1.98m) and 20-stone (127kg) figure accused of financial piracy argued that their client, Kim Dotcom, could not flee the country because he would be immediately spotted for his vast bulk.

The police counter-argued that he had multiple identities and unlimited access to funds.

The court refused bail. Dotcom – real name Kim Schmitz – is accused of involvement in a piracy scam of $175 million (R1.4 billion).

I suppose no pressure group can take up his case on grounds of discrimination. He’s being held in custody in spite of his fatness, not because of his fatness.

Fatness factor (2)

THE above recalls the sad case in the 1960s when an enormously fat showbiz impressario known to everyone simply as Fischke was unable to leave Durban because of his size.

Fischke – whose wife was an exotic dancer billed as Nadjia of the Nile – was due to fly to Canada.

But when they came to embarkation, there was no way they could get Fischke’s bulk through the door of the aircraft. Pull and push as the aircrew tried, they couldn’t shoehorn him in. Nor could they stow him in the freight section because it wasn’t pressurised. So Fischke had to stay put in Durban.

Aircraft have bigger doors these days, so that’s probably why Kim Dotcom’s lawyers didn’t raise the Fischke argument.

Is it a bird…

DANIE du Toit, who styles himself the Amanzimtoti Poet Understudy, is stirred by the Muse to produce these lines on JZ’s international flight arrangements.

What’s that in the sky – should we panic?

It’s a jet with shadows of air force metallic!

But relax; look closer for a second

It’s only Jacob-the-Fecund

Flying in a fashion so befittingly phallic.

Tailpiece

A WEALTHY Arab patient needs a blood transfusion. He has a very rare blood group and the hospital has to scour world-wide for a match. One is found in Scotland.

After the transfusion, the Arab sends the donor a BMW, a bag of diamonds and a million dollars.

A second transfusion is needed, and after this he sends a calendar. A furious phone call ensues.

Scot: “Wha’s this, ya mean bastard?”

Arab: “Aweel, laddie. I’m fu wi’ Scots blood the noo!”

Last word

Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realise that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. – Ronald Reagan

Guy, you’ve just got one Gaga neighbour

Lady Gaga a global ambassador for the hamster wheel trade, has bought a gaff
in the posh Fitzrovia area of the West End.

If she needs to borrow some milk for her china teacup, neighbours include Guy
Ritchie.

A source said: “The property is in a luxurious development which is still
being built. It’s some place. She had been staying in The Lanesborough hotel
every time she visited London but because she is over so much she has
decided to go for it and invest.”

Gaga, who just asked model boyfriend Taylor Kinney to move in with her, is
also looking for places in her native New York and his home state
Pennsylvania.

He might want to think twice about settling down after Gaga told Spanish radio
yesterday that she would love kids but would have to find a suitable Italian
“sperm donor”.

Hardly a vote of confidence in the current supplier.

A First New Year in China

By Darwin Wally T. Wee, a freelance journalist from the Philippines on exchange with the Economic Observer

A week after the Chinese New Year celebration, the euphoric sprit still hangs in the air just like the smoke from the seemingly relentless fireworks lighting.

Well, technically is it still spring festival, which runs for more than two weeks until the arrival of the lantern festival that marks the end of the Lunar New Year celebration.

Being in Beijing for the first time during the holiday period, witnessing this ancient tradition gives me the whole understanding and the confirmation of the colorful and vibrant festivities.

My memory of Chinese New Year celebration back home in the Philippines is quite vague and limited to activities at the Chinese school that I attended during my kindergarten year.  All that I remember though is eating sticky rice cake or tikoy, and the graceful lion and dragon dances.

Three decades ago, Chinese celebrations were only confined within the walls of the small Chinese communities. However, things have changed. Gradually, perhaps due to the rising economic power of the Filipino Chinese, the celebration has become one of the sought-after festivities in the Philippines.

Just like traditional Chinese, Filipinos are also superstitious. Curious about what animal years can bring to them.  Buddha temples that are usually quite throughout the year have now became major attractions. Even non-Buddhists burn joss sticks.

Restaurants, malls, and hotels offer wide varieties of discounted items, and exotic oriental foods that are only available during the Chinese New Year celebrations.  Television programs featuring Filipino showbiz stars singing and dancing to Chinese music have become a traditional event. There were even countdown parties in major parks in Manila with expensive firework displays.

To usher in the dragon year and mark Filipino Chinese’s contributions to the local economy, the Philippines government even declared a national holiday to observe this year’s Chinese New Year.

Back in Beijing, my expectations did not fail me. The streets were busy, people were buying goods inside every mall as if it was the end of the world.

The lavishness of the spring festival is like combining the Christmas and Gregorian New Year celebrations into one.

But, at the end of the day, it’s all about family reunions. Migrant workers, who have been working all year round, can spend quality time with their families. Even a few Chinese prisoners with less than two years left of their sentences were allowed out for a five-day holiday in their hometown.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will perform at the Grammy Awards – The Star-Ledger

td0116pop-01.jpgBruce Springsteen in action in Asbury Park at Light of Day 12.

The Grammy Awards voters have always been kind to Bruce Springsteen. Over his years in showbiz, he’s taken home twenty of those shiny golden gramophones, which makes him one of the most awarded artists in the history of the Academy of Recording Arts. On Feb. 12, he’ll be back on the Grammy stage — but not to accept an award (a year from now, possibly?) This year, the Boss and the E Street Band are headed to the Staples Center in Los Angeles to perform.

The show will be broadcast on CBS at 8 p.m. The amiable LL Cool J will host. The rapper has never helmed the Grammys before, but he’s a fine choice: He’s congenial and quick-witted, he speaks with authority, and he can be very funny when he wants to be. Thankfully, that isn’t always. He’ll pick his spots shrewdly.

The Boss joins an impressive lineup of Grammy night talent. Adele, who has been sidelined for months with a vocal cord condition, will return to action at the Staples Center; she’ll be raring to go, and looking to impress on what will almost certainly be a good night for her. Coldplay and Rihanna are scheduled to reprise their terrific duet on “Princess of China.” Paul McCartney, who, like Springsteen, is a music legend returning with a new album in 2012, will also take the stage. The ailing Glen Campbell, subject of a moving tribute at this year’s CMAs, will perform with The Band Perry and Blake Shelton. Soulful Bruno Mars, ferocious Foo Fighters, scene-stealer Nicki Minaj, best-seller Katy Perry, Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, and the reliably fetching Taylor Swift will also sing at the show.

Springsteen memorably opened the 37th Grammy Awards in 1995 with “Streets of Philadelphia.” The Boss later took home the Grammy for Song of the Year for “Streets.” In recent years, he’s taken the 2009 Grammy for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for “Working on a Dream” from the album of the same name, and the 2008 Grammy for Best Rock Song for the gorgeous “Girls in Their Summer Clothes” from the “Magic” album.

Yao Ming toys with idea of entering film industry

FORMER NBA player Yao Ming is considering extending his business into the film industry, his management team said today.

Although he has never invested in filmmaking, the billionaire is seeking commercial opportunities in the field, said Zhang Mingji, spokesman of Team Yao.

Previous reports said the Chinese basketball celebrity was in touch with Jay Cohen, an independent filmmaker in Hollywood and the two are planning to establish a film finance fund, according to TheWrap.com, a showbiz news website.

“It is still under discussion and we haven’t made a decision yet,” Zhang told reporters.

Cohen mentioned his cooperation with Yao Ming while being interviewed last week about his comment on Chinese film director Zhang Yimou’s latest work, “The Flowers of War,” said TheWrap.

Cohen said during his interview that the Chinese market is different from Hollywood, where the focus is firmly fixed on the bottom line. But he is optimistic about the business.

“They make movies for specific reasons,” Cohen told TheWrap. “Sometimes, it is to introduce the culture of China to other markets, sometimes for cultural history. No one is going to lose money, but sometimes they do it for a sense of cultural pride.”

Karat, Stiglitz and poor Marx

CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat’s new prescription for 21st century socialism is an amorphous amalgam of showbiz Marxism and Keynesism. He accepts that the market economy has an illusion that the market will be “incorporated within the central planning” — a hint that he and other honchos

at AKG Bhavan have converted into cheerleaders of reconstituted capitalists. Prabhat Patnaik, the CPI(M)’s economic ideologue, struck a different chord at a seminar on the ‘Indian Planning Experience (1938-91)’ recently when he described the market as “a coercive phenomenon”.

Karat argued that “after the experiences of socialism in the 20th century, corrections would have to be made, such as the inclusion of a role of the market within a planned economy”. The AKG Bhavan hero then went on to refer to the so-called ‘Latin American model of socialism’ in Venezuela under its petro-Peronist president, Hugo Chavez, and assurances from Chavez’s near-replica, Bolivian president Evo Morales. Both the models are attuned to global Keynesism dished out by Nobel laureates such as Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman along with Jeffrey Sachs and George Soros. They just contest the neo-liberal finance capitalism of the Chicago School of monetary economics, whose sage and seer was Milton Friedman.

Speaking on ‘Occupy Wall Street Movement and the Future of the World Economy’ in Kolkata in mid-January, Stiglitz claimed the ‘non-neo-liberal’ market economies of the Scandinavian countries or of the US in the 1940s, as success stories. They, according to him, simultaneously achieved economic growth and stability unlike what has been happening in the US today. True, the Freidman model is much more oppressive than the previous system of global capitalism. But our own Karat conveniently forgot Fidel Castro’s lament that in the ‘peripheral economies’, two out of every five children suffer from growth retardation, one out of every three is underweight; 30,000 are dying everyday; two million girls are forced into prostitution, and 130 million children do not have access to elementary education. He never said it happened only after the era of neo-liberalism.

Little wonder that China and Viet-nam are models of the ‘socialist market economy’ — that most ludicrous oxymoron in the lexicon of official Marxism. The comrades at AKG Bhavan refuse to learn from the protests against the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organisation for decommodification, and capital controls and more inward-oriented industrial strategies.

Live blog: 2012 State of the Union

(CNN) – President Barack Obama delivers his annual State of the Union address Tuesday night in Washington. Check back here for updates from CNN reporters and producers on Capitol Hill and at the White House. Also tune into CNN for live coverage of the speech beginning at 8 p.m. ET, and afterward for a full wrap-up with reaction and analysis anchored by Anderson Cooper.

Read more here.

10:52 p.m. ET – GOP Rep. Flake on helping Rep. Giffords stand during Democratic applause lines during the president’s address: “It was the least I could do.”

10:50 p.m. ET - Former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain delivers a tea party response to the State of the Union. Watch here.

10:44 p.m. ET
– Daniels ended by laying out a broad theme of the upcoming year for Republicans, who will be working to defeat President Obama and win seats in Congress.

“Republicans in 2012 welcome all our countrymen to a program of renewal that rebuilds the dream for all, and makes our ‘city on a hill’ shine once again.â€

10:38 p.m. ET – Daniels struck a note common on the GOP campaign trail, suggesting President Obama pits ‘haves’ versus ‘have nots.’

“No feature of the Obama Presidency has been sadder than its constant efforts to divide us, to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others.”

10:37 p.m. ET – @crowleycnn: Toughest gig in showbiz, um politics: respond to SOTU speech. POTUS in historic bldg w/ cheering vs You, by yourself w/ a coupla flags.

10:36 p.m. ET – Daniels touched on tax reform for wealthy Americans: “It’s absolutely so that everyone should contribute to our national recovery, including of course the most affluent among us. There are smart ways and dumb ways to do this: the dumb way is to raise rates in a broken, grossly complex tax system, choking off growth without bringing in the revenues we need to meet our debts.”

10:34 p.m. ET – Daniels laid out GOP platform for economic growth: ““That means a dramatically simpler tax system of fewer loopholes and lower rates. A pause in the mindless piling on of expensive new regulations that devour dollars that otherwise could be used to hire somebody.”

10:33 p.m. ET – @LisaDCNN: WHERE THE PARTIES AGREE: Steve Jobs.

10:32 p.m. ET – Daniels issues a call to Republicans in this presidential election year: “An opposition that would earn its way back to leadership must offer not just criticism of failures that anyone can see, but a positive and credible plan to make life better, particularly for those aspiring to make a better life for themselves. Republicans accept this duty, gratefully.”

10:30 p.m. ET - Daniels begans by praising the president, but quickly moved to criticism of Obama’s record.

“The President did not cause the economic and fiscal crises that continue in America tonight. But he was elected on a promise to fix them, and he cannot claim that the last three years have made things anything but worse: the percentage of Americans with a job is at the lowest in decades. One in five men of prime working age, and nearly half of all persons under 30, did not go to work today.”

10:27 p.m. ET – Mitch Daniels began the Republican response from Indianapolis, Indiana.

10:25 p.m. ET
@BryanMonroeCNN: How many times did Obama say: America or Americans (85); Tax (35); Jobs (41); Education (8); Rich (2); Poor (1); Middle class (3) #SOTU

10:23 p.m. ET – Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels will deliver the Republican response to the State of the Union momentarily.

10:22 p.m. ET – Obama exited House Chamber after greeting and signing autographs for members of Congress.

10:21 p.m. ET – @crowleycnn: Don’t touch that dial. Republican response upcoming.

10:19 p.m. ET
@CrowleyCNN: Good speechifying and good politics to open with reminder that Iraq war over end with SEAL mission that killed OBL.

10:17 p.m. ET – @RickSantorum: I’m not running for president to be the most powerful person in the world. I’m running for president to give power back to you. #SOTU

10:17 p.m. ET – @dierdrewalshcnn: President and Gabby Giffords just fist bumped #SOTU

10:16 p.m. ET - Obama ended his address after more than an hour. He greeted members of his cabinet and members of Congress on his way out of the House Chamber.

10:16 p.m. ET – Obama: “As long as we’re joined in common purpose, as long as we maintain our common resolve, our journey moves forward, our future is hopeful, and the state of our Union will always be strong.”

10:15 p.m. ET – Obama: “One of my proudest possessions is the flag that the SEAL Team took with them on the mission to get bin Laden. On it are each of their names. Some may be Democrats. Some may be Republicans. But that doesn’t matter. Just like it didn’t matter that day in the Situation Room, when I sat next to Bob Gates – a man who was George Bush’s defense secretary; and Hillary Clinton, a woman who ran against me for president.”

10:09 p.m. ET - Obama: “Anyone who tells you that America is in decline or that our influence has waned, doesn’t know what they’re talking about.”

10:08 p.m. ET – Obama: “Let there be no doubt: America is determined to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and I will take no options off the table to achieve that goal.”

10:07 p.m. ET – Obama moves into foreign policy. “In Syria, I have no doubt that the Assad regime will soon discover that the forces of change can’t be reversed, and that human dignity can’t be denied.”

10:03 p.m. ET – Obama: “A simple majority is no longer enough to get anything – even routine business – passed through the Senate. Neither party has been blameless in these tactics. Now both parties should put an end to it. For starters, I ask the Senate to pass a rule that all judicial and public service nominations receive a simple up or down vote within 90 days.”

From CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen:
A jab at Congress for many of his nominees for judicial appointments being stalled – and his nominee for the head of the new consumer bureau Richard Cordray’s nomination put in limbo by the Senate. POTUS appointed Cordray in a “recessâ€ appointment. Cordray is a guest tonight in Michelle Obama’s box at the speech

10:03 p.m. ET – Obama: “I’m a Democrat. But I believe what Republican Abraham Lincoln believed: That Government should do for people only what they cannot do better by themselves, and no more.”

Drew bipartisan applause.

10:00 p.m. ET – Obama: “Send me a bill that bans insider trading by Members of Congress, and I will sign it tomorrow.”

Drew applause from members of both parties.

10:00 p.m. ET – @eliselabottcnn: Is anyone counting how many bills Obama has asked Congress to send him? #SOTU

9:59 p.m. ET – Obama: “The greatest blow to confidence in our economy last year didn’t come from events beyond our control. It came from a debate in Washington over whether the United States would pay its bills or not. Who benefited from that fiasco?”

“I’ve talked tonight about the deficit of trust between Main Street and Wall Street. But the divide between this city and the rest of the country is at least as bad – and it seems to get worse every year.â€

From CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen:
A shot at Congress and the partisan divide that the administration has characterized as “dysfunctional

9:57 p.m. ET – @LisaDCNN: FAIR: appears in the president’s speech 9 times.

9:55 p.m. ET – @DanaBashCNN: Payroll tax extension. McConnell applauds in slow motion

9:55 p.m. ET – Obama: “Right now, because of loopholes and shelters in the tax code, a quarter of all millionaires pay lower tax rates than millions of middle-class households. Right now, Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary… Tax reform should follow the Buffett rule: If you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30 percent in taxes.â€

From CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen:
In fact Michelle Obama tonight is sitting with Warren Buffett’s secretary Debbie Bosanek in her box watching the president’s speech

9:54 p.m. ET – Obama: “People cannot afford losing $40 out of each paycheck this year. There are plenty of ways to get this done. So let’s agree right here, right now: No side issues. No drama. Pass the payroll tax cut without delayâ€

From CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen:
This is about the showdown between Congressional Republicans and Obama just before Christmas over the payroll tax cut. The compromise then was only to extend the tax cut until February, now just days away.

9:53 p.m. ET – @JohnKingCNN: POTUS makes case for health care and financial regulation changes __ repealing both are major #gop2012 themes. #SOTU

9:52 p.m. ET – Obama: “We will also establish a Financial Crimes Unit of highly trained investigators to crack down on large-scale fraud and protect people’s investments.”

“I am asking my Attorney General to create a special unit of federal prosecutors and leading state attorneys general to expand our investigations into the abusive lending and packaging of risky mortgages that led to the housing crisis. This new unit will hold accountable those who broke the law, speed assistance to homeowners, and help turn the page on an era of recklessness that hurt so many Americans.â€

From CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen:
Wall Street reforms are important – it’s Wall Street misbehavior many blame for the risky loans that toppled the housing market.

9:50 p.m. ET – Obama: “We got rid of one rule from 40 years ago that could have forced some dairy farmers to spend $10,000 a year proving that they could contain a spill – because milk was somehow classified as an oil. With a rule like that, I guess it was worth crying over spilled milk.”

Drew polite laughter and a few groans.

9:47 p.m. ET – @yellincnn: In #SOTU Pres touts oil production vows to grow natural gas industry…trying to inoculate against #Keystone attacks on campaign trail?

9:46 p.m. ET – Obama: “Take the money we’re no longer spending at war, use half of it to pay down our debt, and use the rest to do some nation-building right here at home.”

From CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen:
This is the so-called peace dividend – use the money saved from ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to pay off the huge deficit and to put Americans to work building infrastructure projects.

Drew applause from Democrats.

9:45 p.m. ET – @LisaDCNN: Halfway. (ish)

9:43 p.m. ET – Obama: “It’s time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry that’s rarely been more profitable, and double-down on a clean energy industry that’s never been more promising. Pass clean energy tax credits and create these jobs.”

Applause from Democrats.

9:41 p.m. ET – @diedrewalshcnn: Some loud cheers from GOPers when President mentions “all of the above” energy strategy- a contrast to smattering of applause on immigration

9:40 p.m. ET – Obama: “Tonight, I’m directing my Administration to open more than 75 percent of our potential offshore oil and gas resources.”

“We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly one hundred years, and my Administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy.”

“The development of natural gas will create jobs and power trucks and factories that are cleaner and cheaper, proving that we don’t have to choose between our environment and our economy.â€

From CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen:
This energy push comes just a week after the Obama administration nixed the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline

Obama’s energy remarks drew loud applause from Democrats, and scattered cheers from Republicans.

9:36 p.m. ET
– “That means women should earn equal pay for equal work. It means we should support everyone who’s willing to work; and every risk-taker and entrepreneur who aspires to become the next Steve Jobs.”

Jobs’ widow is in the first lady’s box tonight.

9:35 p.m. ET
– Obama: “I believe as strongly as ever that we should take on illegal immigration. That’s why my Administration has put more boots on the border than ever before. That’s why there are fewer illegal crossings than when I took office.”

“The opponents of action are out of excuses. We should be working on comprehensive immigration reform right now. But if election-year politics keeps Congress from acting on a comprehensive plan, let’s at least agree to stop expelling responsible young people who want to staff our labs, start new businesses, and defend this country. Send me a law that gives them the chance to earn their citizenship. I will sign it right away.”

From CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen:
POTUS is talking about the DREAM act, a bill that would allow undocumented students to become eligible for legal status. He announced his support for it earlier this year and is once again returning focus to immigration reform after being criticized by many in the Latino community for failing to push harder for reform.

9:34 p.m. ET – From CNN’s Dana Bash: Interesting dynamic. Jeff Flake – a Republican – is sitting with Rep. Giffords. He’s helping her get up when Dems get up for POTUS applause lines – even though he clearly wouldn’t be standing on his own. Just saw him ask her if she wanted to stand for last one – she declined and smiled and clearly thanked him.

The irony is that had Giffords not been shot, the two of them may be running against each other for Kyl’s Senate seat.

9:33 p.m. ET - Obama: “I call on every State to require that all students stay in high school until they graduate or turn eighteen.”

9:31 p.m. ET - Obama praises the work of schoolteachers. “So instead of bashing them, or defending the status quo, let’s offer schools a deal. Give them the resources to keep good teachers on the job, and reward the best ones. In return, grant schools flexibility: To teach with creativity and passion; to stop teaching to the test; and to replace teachers who just aren’t helping kids learn.”

9:29 p.m. ET – @crowleycnn: While every one jumps up and down around them, The Supremes are sitting so still it looks like they are painted into the scene.

9:28 p.m. ET – Obama highlights Jackie Bray, a single mom from North Carolina who was laid off from her job as a mechanic. She is sitting in the first lady’s box.

“I want every American looking for work to have the same opportunity as Jackie did. Join me in a national commitment to train two million Americans with skills that will lead directly to a job.”

9:27 p.m. ET - Obama: “I’m announcing the creation of a Trade Enforcement Unit that will be charged with investigating unfair trade practices in countries like China. There will be more inspections to prevent counterfeit or unsafe goods from crossing our borders.”

From CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen:
When POTUS visited the Pacific Rim late last year he talked about how China must “play by the rules”.

9:26 p.m. ET – @danabashcnn: Repubs sit on tax reform / ship jobs overseas line. Stone cold #sotu

9:25 p.m. ET - Obama: “My message is simple. It’s time to stop rewarding businesses that ship jobs overseas, and start rewarding companies that create jobs right here in America. Send me these tax reforms, and I’ll sign them right away.”

Applause from Democrats; camera shows a stony-faced Rep. Eric Cantor.

9:23 p.m. ET – Obama: “We should start with our tax code. Right now, companies get tax breaks for moving jobs and profits overseas. Meanwhile, companies that choose to stay in America get hit with one of the highest tax rates in the world. It makes no sense, and everyone knows it. So let’s change it. First, if you’re a business that wants to outsource jobs, you shouldn’t get a tax deduction for doing it.”

From CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen:
This is the first time we’ve heard the administration talk about countering companies outsourcing jobs by taking away some of their tax breaks if they do so.

9:21 p.m. ET – Obama lauds success of American auto industry. “We bet on American workers. We bet on American ingenuity. And tonight, the American auto industry is back.”

Applause, but no standing ovation.

9:19 p.m. ET – Obama: “The state of our Union is getting stronger. And we’ve come too far to turn back now. As long as I’m President, I will work with anyone in this chamber to build on this momentum. But I intend to fight obstruction with action, and I will oppose any effort to return to the very same policies that brought on this economic crisis in the first place.”

Received applause from Democrats.

9:18 p.m. ET – Obama: “In the six months before I took office, we lost nearly four million jobs. And we lost another four million before our policies were in full effect. Those are the facts.”

9:17 p.m. ET – @JohnKingCNN: POTUS uses post 9-11 troops and his WW2 generation grandparents to frame top of speech “american values” litany. #SOTU #cnn

8:43 p.m. ET - One final excerpt from tonight’s address, with analysis below from CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen.

“Let’s never forget: Millions of Americans who work hard and play by the rules every day deserve a government and a financial system that does the same. It’s time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts, and no copouts. An America built to last insists on responsibility from everybody.”

8:34 p.m. ET – CNN Senior Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash reports some “old fashioned schmoozing” taking place in the House Chamber.

8:32 p.m. ET – Thune mentions two things he’d like to hear in Obama’s address: a plan for producing American energy and substantive plan for jobs.

8:31 p.m. ET – South Dakota Republican Sen. John Thune tells CNN’s Kate Bolduan: Obama will distract and shift the blame for a poor economy. “Obama record has been a failed one for American workers.”

8:28 p.m. – @arifleischer : I wonder if there will be an empty chair in the POTUS box for all the workers who didn’t get a job building Keystone.

8:26 p.m. ET – Here’s another excerpt from tonight’s State of the Union, with analysis from CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen.

“…we will not go back to an economy weakened by outsourcing, bad debt, and phony financial profits. Tonight, I want to speak about how we move forward, and lay out a blueprint for an economy that’s built to last – an economy built on American manufacturing, American energy, skills for American workers, and a renewal of American values.”

“As long as I’m President, I will work with anyone in this chamber to build on this momentum. But I intend to fight obstruction with action, and I will oppose any effort to return to the very same policies that brought on this economic crisis in the first place.”

A warning for the GOP in Congress and a continuation of Obama’s “We Can’t Wait” tact, where the administration circumvents Congress and pushes forward initiatives that can be achieved through executive action. Obama’s recess appointment of consumer chief Richard Cordray is an example of this – Cordray, by the way, is a guest in the first lady’s box at tonight’s speech.

8:13 p.m. ET – Tom Foreman looks at how well Obama has achieved goals made in 2011′s State of the Union. Read more here.

8:04 p.m. ET – One excerpt from tonight’s address, with analysis from CNN White House Producer Lesa Jansen below.

“We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules. What’s at stake are not Democratic values or Republican values, but American values. We have to reclaim them.”

The president seeks to frame the debate in this election year, drawing a clear contrast between Democrats’ and Republicans’ views of the country’s future and the role government will play.
